Oh Mio Gelato, is part of a family-owned business, was born out of a passion for authentic Italian gelato and a love for exploring new flavours.

It all started when Danny, the founder of Oh Mio Gelato, joined his mother's catering company, Catering by Riva, as a strategy consultant. He had inherited his mother's talent for cooking and her enthusiasm for customer service. He helped her cater for various events and occasions, offering delicious and high-quality food to their clients. He also received training from an Italian masterchef, who taught him how to make authentic and delicious gelato.

Danny noticed that there was a gap in the market for good quality gelato, as most of the ice cream shops in Johannesburg offered mass-produced and artificial products. He decided to fill this gap by making his own gelato, using the finest ingredients imported from Italy. He bought a gelato machine and started experimenting with different recipes and flavours creating a range of classic and exotic options, such as vanilla, chocolate, pistachio, lemon, mango, salted caramel, and more. He also created seasonal and special flavours, inspired by the flavours he found around the world, such as vanilla france, caramelised figs, beuno, tiramisu, and more.

Danny's gelato was a hit among his mother's catering clients, who loved the creamy and refreshing dessert. He decided to expand his gelato division of the business, which is a part of Catering by Riva, and named it Oh Mio Gelato, which means "Oh My Gelato" in Italian, to express his joy and pride for his product. He used the skills and staff already in the family business to run his Catering By Riva gelato operation. He focused on events, deliveries, and catering for any function or occasion, making his gelato the perfect addition to any celebration. He also launched a freezer in Kosherworld, a local supermarket, to meet the high demand for his gelato. He attracted many gelato lovers, who appreciated the quality, freshness, and creativity of Danny's gelato. Danny continued to grow this division in the catering business, partnering with local suppliers, to source only the finest ingredients for his gelato. He also supported various social and environmental causes, such as animal welfare, education and charities.
